Why blog for yourself?
That is a question I often ask when my blogs are getting few if any readers, turning no profit, and seem to be just another “1 in a million” of the blogs online. Yet there is so much more to this whole idea. Blogging for yourself is, in so many ways, the perfect creative approach.
Why Not Blog for Profit?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with blogging for profit. Here’s one useful idea. Say you’re an expert on something, but hate talking about it; on the other side, you’re a novice on something, but you love writing about it. You blog on both. That means you have one profitable blog and one fun blog. It may turn around on you. You may make more money on the personal blog than the expert blog.
Blogging Art:
People respond to excitement in a blogger, or in any writer for that matter. If a freelance journalist hates writing about rock bands, loves opera, then he/she often is better off writing about opera. It may be a smaller audience, but that audience sees excitement. Readers don’t like boredom anymore than bloggers.
Turning Away the Riches:
The idea of turning away riches is somewhat flawed from the outset. The blogging reality is there’s a good chance you will turn a profit if you keep at it. However, by blogging for yourself you put pennies in the bank for the future. You bring in new, receptive audiences to your articles. You don’t dread visiting your fun blog. On many levels, it may help you with the more profitable blogging idea. You may see a topic or two that relates. Or you may just blog on both with one blog instead of two. Blogging for yourself isn’t about following rules and always keeping an eye on the dollar. It’s more about finding an audience and seeing what they like, and then discovering what you like doing in return.
You Write What You Want:
Blogging for yourself is about writing what you want! You like some obscure topic, and no matter what, you want to write on it. Do it! People often talk about writing what they want. Freelance writers … novelists … short story writers … and yes, bloggers. The best way to write what you want is via blogging. The second, whether it’s fiction writing or essay writing, I leave up to you.
You’re Surprised!
One keyword in the blogging world is again, one blog taking off and the other going at a snail’s pace. Profit wise, one blog is more profitable than the other. Some writers take this to the next level, starting 3 or more blogs. It’s best, especially in the beginning, to stick to two blogs and focus on finding a readership.
Ideas and Details:
The idea of blogging for yourself is much like writing in a journal or diary. You sometimes want to escape it, to rebel and follow the normal rules of life. After all, bills still need to be paid, kids still need to go to school, or the boss still likes to criticize you. There is another idea, not so far away from the journey of a blogger. It’s the dream where that one blog takes off and leads to not only experience but profit. It’s fun when that happens. And often it does
